"On this, their third release, the band’s claim that it ‘focuses heavily on the song-based approach with the band showing their considerable song writing skills throughout’, is borne out by a worthy album of splendid soulful blues. Predecessors, such as Humble Pie and Stone The Crows were fronted by outstanding singers, often to the reputational detriment of their instrumental co-conspirators. Not so here. Helen Turner’s dynamic, mature and soulful voice is a fitting lead instrument, but the sympathetic, never obtrusive accompaniment allows her to breathe intense emotion and wholly credible soul into Tattered & Torn. ‘Love Like Leather’ opens, with principal songwriter Iain Black’s bright arpeggiated acoustic guitar morphing into a pulsing, medium-paced rocker. ‘Black Coffee’ sees Turner in strident and delightfully coquettish in turn. ‘Cheatin’ Again’ is exemplary three-piece instrumental playing, with even bassist Trev Turley given a tasteful single verse solo. ‘Passion And Pain’ and ‘Dig A Little Deeper’ recall Free, no less, at their soul-mining peak. So it goes on, over twelve classy performances. Tattered & Torn is a triumph of fine songs, empathetic playing and singing of passion, spirit and feeling."
